The first twenty years of my life was in a family blighted by alcoholism, violence, abuse and neglect. I left home determined to escape those shadows but spent the next twenty years with no real understanding of what being alive and free really means. I was relieved not to be violent or alcoholic but the truth was I wasn’t really anything at all. For nearly ten years now I have been learning to live my life as a celebration of love, freedom and service. I have Bachelors and Masters degrees and I have been lucky to participate in a great many training events, workshops and retreats learning about myself and others through conscious relating and sexuality. I have gone from barely living half a life to living a life with momentum, purpose and joy. I have been a student of Tantra for several years and an active member of the London International School of Temple Arts community. My training includes professional sex worker training from Seani Love of the School of Erotic Mysteries for Shamanic BDSM, Tantra Massage training at Tara Yoga Centre and professional sensual masseur training with Colin Richards of Intimacy Matters. These talks are a distillation of some of the lessons I have learned in this time.
In Pursuit of Pleasure: The Archetypes and the Heroes Journey
Moore and Gillette’s King Warrior Magician Lover aligned to the Hero’s Journey – how these complementary frames for understanding the human journey can help us understand ourselves and better ways to pursue pleasure.
These ideas help us to recognise patterns of behaviours and attitudes in ourselves and others at different stages of our lives, whether day to day or in the larger long term personal narrative.
I will offer you an introduction to Jung’s theory of archetypes and go a little deeper with how this has been developed by Moore and Gillette. We will have an introduction to the Hero’s Journey and how this maps into day to day experiences of life as well as the longer narratives of who we are, where we have come from and where we are going, what we might perhaps think of as our purpose or destiny. Are we being true to ourselves? Are we serving ourselves or others? Is there anything worth fighting for anymore? These frames can give us handy tools for use as reflective frames in challenging situations.
In particular we will consider how the archetypes and the steps of the Hero’s Journey relate to the pursuit of pleasure. When do we feel it is okay to say yes to pleasure, and when do we not? How can we access more pleasure, deeper pleasure, shared pleasure? I will pose these questions and do my best to answer them with your help. I hope you will find this an insightful, entertaining and useful session that offers you a fresh perspective on the pursuit of pleasure.
